Music Curriculum Statement : Elveden
Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. -Plato
Introduction
The purpose of this document is to state the aims, principles, strategies and organisation of the teaching of music through Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 National Curriculum statement.
‘Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. ‘
Music Curriculum Statement
Intent
To develop musical knowledge and skills so that children are engaged and inspired to develop a love or music. Children will know the key elements of music through listening, singing, composing, performing and reviewing a wide range of music.
Implementation
At Elveden C of E Primary Academy, we use the musical programme, Charanga and the Model Music Curriculum scheme. Our weekly music lessons are progressive and we teach the knowledge and skills required from Reception through to Year 6. Through our teaching of music, pupils will know a range of key vocabulary, the required musical elements and the history of music and composers. In addition, singing is embedded in our termly collective worship timetable and the children sing a variety of worship songs. The children know about the history of music through learning about the composer of the month. They listen and appraise a wide range of recorded music. Each term, a music specialist teaches different classes. The children participate in fun and engaging sessions, sing songs, explore and play a range of instruments to develop their musical knowledge and skills.
Extra – curricular opportunities are available for the children including a Samba ban and a Key Stage recorder group, group instrumental lessons on a 2 year cycle.
Enrichment opportunities are planned into the curriculum each year.
These include:
• the choir singing within our local community; at events such as Carols at Bury Cathedral and in residential homes (although this has been difficult due to Covid-19)
• a selection of live musical performances;
• performing: in collective worship, at the annual school production in KS2
Impact
By the time our pupils leave Elveden C of E Primary Academy, they will know a wide repertoire of songs and music from different cultures and historic periods. They will have acquired the musical knowledge and skills required to sing, play, compose, perform and appraise music. The integral nature of music and the learner creates an enormously rich palette from which a student may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world.
Below are the Young Voices rehearsal tracks for children planning to join us at the O2. As we are limited to what we can do in school at the moment, please use these at home to prepare. There are lots of well know Disney classics. In the spring, we will use these as part of choir club so it would be really useful if the children are familiar with these in advance.
